Service history

Early service

The Farragut was authorized for construction by Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965 and was assigned initial registry number NCC-1702. Following her launch on stardate 1/8806, the Farragut was assigned registry number NCC-1647 and began a two-year shakedown cruise. (Star Fleet Technical Manual; Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

Signing aboard the Farragut shortly after she entered service was Aldous Kramer who served as the ship's weapons defense officer. He would go on to serve in this capacity for the next fourteen years. (TOS: The Kobayashi Maru)

During his training and education at Starfleet Academy, Cadet James T. Kirk was assigned to the Farragut to serve as a midshipman on a training cruise. During the mission, the Farragut responded to a distress call from a starship under attack by the Yagghorth. By the time the Farragut arrived at the ship's coordinates, the Yagghorth had been destroyed and Kirk joined a boarding party to ascertain the ship's status, where he assisted in pulling out three bodies where the Yaggorth had left them. (TOS: Crossroad)

2254-2257

By 2254, the Farragut was under the command of Captain Stephen Garrovick. In this year, Ensign Kirk was assigned to the Farragut on his first deep space assignment following his graduation from the Academy. As Garrovick liked his junior officers to be trained in a variety roles, Kirk was rotated to serve as navigator, tactical officer and assistant engineer during his tour aboard the Farragut. (TOS: Constitution, Inception; TOS: "All Those Years Ago...")

In the following year, the Farragut was assigned to the sector surrounding Epsilon Canaris III after pirates from that world had taken advantage of Federation law to set up a business in hijacking, slavery and drug smuggling. The Farragut engaged the pirates on a number of occasions, but the final battle saw the starship outnumbered six-to-one. The Farragut triumphed but not without suffering a pounding and causing many injuries to personnel, including Ensign Kirk, who was working as weapons officer on the bridge when a stanchion fell on him. Following the battle, the Farragut limped to Starbase 7 and arrived two weeks later. Kirk later returned to the Farragut following his convalescence and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. (TOS: Crisis on Centaurus)

At some point following Kirk's promotion, the Farragut played host to renowned scientist, Professor Patrick Moore, who at the time was prospecting for the American Continent Institute. (TOS: "The Sweet Smell of Evil")

Some time later, the Farragut's galley refrigeration units malfunctioned and the crew were forced to trade for ships stores with Captain Esserass of the Selessan. Unfortunately, the only foodstuff that were available was several tons of Orion demma, which was taken aboard to maintain the crew until the Farragut could put in at Starbase 7 for resupply. However, by the time the ship had arrived at starbase, sickbay had run out of fertility control ampules, due to the effect of demma on the ship's crew. (TOS: Dreams of the Raven)

Lieutenant Kirk later rescued nine personnel, including Kramer, following a premature weapon detonation that took out most the Farragut's starboard weapon pod. After the incident, Kramer successfully petitioned Starfleet to award Kirk with a Citation for Conspicuous Gallantry and later presented the award to Kirk. (TOS: The Kobayashi Maru)

Tycho IV

Aftermath

Shortly after the incident at Tycho IV, the Farragut was re-routed to proceed to a planet and negotiate with the planet's inhabitants for trading rights for life-saving pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, the Klingons were also negotiating for rights and the Klingon captain sent down a landing party to the surface to steal a valuable holy relic so that they could hold the inhabitants to ransom. However, Lieutenant Kirk decided to remove the relic for "safekeeping" himself before the Klingons arrived and then warned the inhabitants so that an armed party were waiting for them. (TOS: From the Depths)
